Tomb being prepared for next Pontiff to die; Vatican says work is routine

March 17, 2016

The Vatican press office has issued a statement to ease concerns about a report that a new papal tomb is being prepared in St. Peter's basilica.

The I Media news agency reported on March 16 that workers are preparing a marble tomb for the next Pontiff to die. But Father Federico Lombardi, the director of the Vatican press office, said there was "no mystery" about the preparation. There is only one chapel remaining free in the grotto of the basilica, he said, and "it was wise to foresee other possibilities as well."
