Cardinal Müller repeats: no change in Church teaching on divorce

March 02, 2016

The prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith has underlined his stand against any change in Church teaching on marriage and divorce, in a pair of German-language interviews.

Cardinal Gerhard Müller told a Cologne radio audience that "there cannot be a second marriage." He added that "the teaching of the Church is not my property," and the Catholic hierarchy is obliged to pass on "the dogma that God has revealed to us."

In a separated interview with a newspaper in the same German city, Cardinal Müller said that the question of divorce and remarriage should not be undermined by a compromise that would "turn the clear Word of God into something vague." The Church, he said, can never "dissolve or suspend a validly contracted and truly sacramental marriage."
