Roman catacomb restoration funded by foundation in Azerbaijan
February 23, 2016
The Vatican reported on February 23 that an ambitious restoration project at the catacombs of Sts. Mercellinus and Peter has been completed.
The restoration, underwritten by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation of Azerbaijan, involved the use of advanced techniques, including laser-based cleaning, to remain centuries of accumulated grime from paintings in the catacombs.
The Heydar Aliyev Foundation has now agreed to support another restoration project at the catacombs of St. Sebastian Outside-the-Walls. The new project will include restoring a group of fiften sarcophagi. The project is also designed to make the entire complex open to the public; currently only a portion is accessible.
