Returning from Mexico trip, Pope again venerates icon of Salus Populi Romani

February 19, 2016

Following his usual practice, Pope Francis visited the basilica of St. Mary Major, to pray before the icon of the Virgin Mary, Salus Populi Romani, after his return from a pastoral trip to Mexico.

Landing at Rome's Ciampino airport on Thursday afternoon, February 18, the Pope traveled directly to the Roman basilica by car. After venerating the icon and spending a few moments in prayer, he placed a bouquet before the Marian image. Then he continued his trip across Rome, returning to the Vatican.
