Zambia's president meets with Pontiff

February 05, 2016

Pope Francis met on February 5 with President Edgar Chagwa Lungu of Zambia.

A Vatican statement released after the meeting indicated that the conversation had centered on Church-state relations, with a particular emphasis on the involvement of the Catholic Church in the fields of education and health care, as well as the drive to ease poverty and encourage cultural dialogue. The Pope also spoke with the Zambian leader about political topics, including both general topics such as climate change and migration, and issues specific to Africa, such as the prospects for peace in the Great Lakes region.
