The Vatican's top foreign-policy official lent his support to continued British membership in the European Union, in a television interview.
Archbishop Paul Gallagher, the Secretary for Relations with States, said that the Vatican would respect the results of a referendum in the United Kingdom on withdrawsal from the European Union. "But," he said, "I think we would see it as being something that is not going to make a stronger Europe."

Respect for the will of the nation expressed in referendum would be all that is required from a Catholic clergyman. Any additional comment could backfire badly. The same applies to all other political decisions that do not involve Faith and morality.
