Pope to visit mosque next week?
January 20, 2016
Pope Francis “could” visit the Mosque of Rome on January 27, the president of the Union of Islamic Communities in Italy said in an interview with the Italian bishops’ television network.
A delegation from Rome's Islamic community met with the Pontiff in a private audience on January 20, to present him with a formal invitation to visit.
“Today it is necessary to highlight the importance of this dialogue [between Muslims and Catholics] more than ever before,” said Izzedin Elzir.
No pope has visited the Mosque of Rome, which opened in 1995 and seats over 12,000.
