Sebelius vetoes legislation on late-term abortions

April 24, 2009

Governor Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas-- whose nomination by President Obama to become Secretary of Health and Human Service faces strong opposition from pro-life forces in Washington-- has vetoed legislation that would have required abortionists to provide medical records on late-term abortions to state authorities. The Kansas bill would also have allowed women to sue doctors for illegal abortions. Sebelius said these provisions could amount to "intimidation" of abortionists. Michael Steele, the chairman of the Republican National Committee, urged the Senate to postpone a vote on her federal appointment pending an investigation of her "evolving relationship with a late-term abortion doctor as well as about her position on the practice of late-term abortions." Sebelius has sought to downplay the campaign contributions she has received from Dr. George Tiller, a notorious specialist in late-term abortions.
