Cardinal Wuerl highlights plight of persecuted Christians

L’Osservatore Romano has published an excerpt of a new book by Cardinal Donald Wuerl of Washington on the persecution of Christians.
“According to reliable estimates, more than 200 million Christians in 60 countries around the world face some form of restriction on their faith,” the prelate wrote in To the Martyrs: A Reflection on the Supreme Christian Witness.
He added:
Yet it is hardly remarked upon in major media outlets. It is barely noticed by diplomats and heads of state. It is, in fact, treated as a political liability. Christian martyrs, it has been said, are too religious to excite the interest of the American left and too foreign to rouse the interest of the right. And so martyrs are abandoned to their fight, left to suffer alone.

Cardinal Wuerl from time to time does offer gems of insight: "too religious to excite the interest of the...left and too foreign to rouse the interest of the right." There can be no argument that in the atheistic post-Protestant United States, believing Catholics are tolerated at best as foreigners. For the left, there either is no actual God or the proper notion of God is the material universe. Thus believing Catholics are considered wackos, not worthy of the time it takes to deal with them.
