Slovenian voters reject same-sex marriage, 63-37%, in referendum vote

December 21, 2015

The people of Slovenia have rejected same-sex marriage in a public referendum, for the 2nd time in three years.

In a nationwide ballot on December 20, 63% of the voters opposed a bid to redefine marriage. The vote overturned a decision by the nation’s lawmakers, who had given their approval to a bill that would have defined marriage as the union of two adults, rather than (as at present) the union of a man and woman.

The referendum was called after leaders of the Catholic Church backed an effort to collect the 40,000 signatures required to put the new legislation up for a national vote.

Wait, the People decide things like this in Slovenia? The U.S. should think about adopting that system.

Just hope Slovenia doesn't have an activist, inappropriate meddling "institution" as the US Supreme Court.
