Breakthrough: North Korea will allow celebration of Mass in Pyongyang cathedral

December 07, 2015

Catholic priests from South Korea will be allowed to celebrate Mass in the capital of North Korea, the Korean bishops’ conference has announced.

After a 4-day visit to North Korea, a delegation of the bishops’ conference announced that they had arranged for “greater religious exchange” between the two countries of the divided peninsula. Priests will visit Pyongyang, the northern capital, for major feast days, and celebrate Mass in Changchung cathedral.

The Pyongyang cathedral is the only Catholic church in North Korea. There are no Catholic priests living in the country.

The provision for celebrating Mass in Pyongyang is a radical departure from the existing policies of North Korea. Despite a constitutional guarantee of religious freedom, the country’s totalitarian government has banned religious services.

This is a MIRACLE!! This is the beginning of a great change for North Korea. May the first Holy Mass celebrated there bring many people to the truth, to Jesus. For us christians who live in free countries our responsibilities are many when it's about praying again and again for those who don't know the meaning of "freedom". May God bless North Korea.
