Italian cabinet minister ducks question on extradition of 'Vatileaks II' defendants

December 03, 2015

An Italian cabinet minister has said that international law will determine his government’s response to the “Vatileaks II” trial.

"We have the Italian penal code and the Vatican has its own judicial system," Angelino Alfano, the interior minister, said. “In these circumstances the rules of international law will apply.”

Alfano was addressing questions about whether Italy would allow extradition of Italian journalists to face sentencing, if they are convicted by a Vatican tribunal. The Italian cabinet member declined to answer that question directly, noting that “we’re not in that phase yet.”
