Notre Dame faculty committee advises against reducing theology requirement

December 02, 2015

A faculty committee at the University of Notre Dame has recommended against eliminating the requirement that undergraduates take at least two theology courses.

“In placing theology at the core of its Catholic liberal arts education, Notre Dame is not merely adding another discipline to the existing educational paradigm,” the committee’s draft report reads.

“Two theology courses have come to be seen as a barometer of our support of Catholic mission,” the faculty committee said. “Moving away from two required courses in theology would be a move toward secularization.”

The committee's report-- part of a campus-wide review of the curriculum that began in 2014-- will now be discussed by the full faculty, before coming up for a final decision next fall.

3 cheers for ND. With our continued prayers and the conscientious efforts of their faculty, who knows, maybe one day they'll even become Catholic.

Courage ... in today's university environment. Thanks be to God for the courage of the Notre Dame Curriculum Committee! May the ND Administration show similar courage.
