Brazilian cardinal delivers climate petition to Paris conference
December 01, 2015
As Barack Obama, Xi Jinping, and other world leaders traveled to Paris for the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 21), a Brazilian cardinal delivered a petition calling for drastic cuts in carbon emissions “to keep the global temperature rise below the dangerous 1.5°C threshold, and to aid the world’s poorest in coping with climate change impacts.”
“It was a profound honor to represent the 840,000 Catholics – children, men, and women united across continents, cultures, and languages – who have made themselves instruments of God’s peace by signing the Global Catholic Climate Movement (GCCM) petition,” said Cardinal Claudio Hummes, 81, who served as prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy from 2006 to 2010.
