April 21, 2009
Pope Benedict has appointed Archbishop Zygmunt Zimowski as the third president of the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Assistance to Health Care Workers. Born in 1949 in Kupienin, Poland, Archbishop Zimowski was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Tarnów in 1973. After earning a doctorate in dogmatic theology, he worked for the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith and was involved in the preparation of the Polish edition of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. When he was named Bishop of Radom in 2002, his principal consecrator was Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger. Proficient in English, French, German, Italian, and Russian, he is the author of 120 publications.
Archbishop Zimowski replaces Mexican Cardinal Javier Lozano Barragán, who has served as president since 1997 and has retired at the age of 76. The council's first president, Cardinal Fiorenzo Angelini, served from 1985 to 1996.
