Extremists' goal is to eradicate Christianity in Middle East, says cardinal

November 19, 2015

Extremists in the Middle East are “intent on eradicating the Christian civilization, nothing less,” warned Cardinal Edwin O’Brien in an address to an Australian audience.

“Unless we face the facts, this radicalism, this extremism, is going to keep spreading,” said the American-born cardinal, who is now the grandmaster of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre. He lamented that while Christians in the Middle East face the daily threat of persecution, the West has been “very blasé about the whole thing.”

Cardinal O’Brien—who spent years as a military chaplain before becoming Archbishop of Baltimore—also expressed dismay that the West had not taken action to curb the forces of extremism. There was ample warning that of the growth of violent factions, he said, and “we did nothing to stop them.”
