Catholic, Protestant leaders welcome ‘Fresh Start’ agreement in Northern Ireland

Archbishop Eamon Martin of Armagh, joined by local Anglican, Presbyterian, and Methodist leaders, has issued a statement welcoming the “Fresh Start” agreement in Northern Ireland.

The agreement, supported by political leaders in Northern Ireland, the United Kingdom, and Ireland, addresses paramilitary groups and the devolution of political power to Northern Ireland.
“We welcome the announcement, that with the support of the two Governments, a wide ranging agreement has been reached,” the Christian leaders said in their joint statement.
“We recognize that everyone involved in the negotiations will not have achieved all that they wanted in this agreement, nor will everyone who reads it be fully content with every aspect of it,” they added. “Such is the nature of any agreed accommodation.”
