American bishops' statement aims to counter 'epidemic' of pornography

November 18, 2015

The spread of pornography has become a “crisis” that undermines marriage, diminishes respect for human sexuality, and treats people as “disposable objects,” the US bishops argue in a strongly worded pastoral statement approved on November 17.

At their annual meeting in Baltimore, the American bishops gave overwhelming approval to a statement entitled “Create in Me a Clean Heart.” Referring to the use of pornography as an “epidemic,” Bishop Richard Malone, the chairman of the committee on the laity, which prepared the statement, said that it should serve as a “catalyst for increased pastoral attention to this challenge at the national and social level.”
