'Vatileaks' journalist refuses to submit to questioning by Vatican prosecutors

November 17, 2015

The Italian author of a new book based on leaked Vatican documents has refused to respond to a summons for questioning in by Vatican prosecutors.

Gianluigi Nuzzi, the author of Merchants in the Temple, said that he would not submit to questioning because the Vatican’s laws do not allow him to protect his sources. He said that instead of weighing criminal charges against him, the Vatican should investigate the allegations of financial misconduct that are detailed in his book.

The other Vatileaks journalist Emiliano Fittipaldi reportedly did submit to questioning, saying that he did so because he wanted to understand the reasons behind the accusations against him. He thinks accusations that he did wrong are "crazy" and basically not in keeping with modern standards on these matters. He thinks a trial is up ahead for the jailed priest Msgr Baldo and that the Vatican is trying to make an example of him and send a message.
