No plans to curtail papal visit to Central African Republic, despite security worries

November 13, 2015

Plans for Pope Francis to visit the Central African Republic are unchanged “despite current anxities,” the secretary-general of the country’s episcopal conference has indicated.

Msgr. Cyriaque Gbate Doumalo said that “we think we can maintain security at least in the capital, Bangui,” during the papal visit later this month. He said that the latest outbreaks of violence in the country have occurred far from the capital.

French diplomats had reportedly recommended to the Vatican that the Pope’s trip to the Central African Republic should be cancelled or at least drastically shortened. French military officials have announced that they will not reduce their peacekeeping presence in the country, but cannot guarantee security for the Pope during his visit.
