The cross, made from wooden oars tied with ropes, symbolizes the trips that migrants make in flimsy boats, crossing the Mediterranean to seek refuge in Lampedusa. Pope Francis sought to call attention to the troubles of migrants by choosing Lampedusa-- an island southwest of Malta, in the middle of the Mediterranean, which is often a destination for migrants from Africa-- as the site for his first trip outside Italy after his election to the papacy.
