Former abbot of Montecassino under investigation for fraud

November 11, 2015

Italian police are investigating a former abbot of the ancient Benedictine monastery of Montecassino on fraud charges.

Father Pietro Vittorelli is suspected of working with his brother to divert about €500,000 funds from the abbey. Appointed head of the Montecassino community in 2007, Father Vittorelli resigned in 2013 for health reasons following a heart attack.

Founded by St. Benedict in 529, the Montecassino abbey became one of the world’s most famous monasteries. It was destroyed by Allied bombing during World War II, but rebuilt, according to the original plans, after the war.
