More UN peacekeeping troops due in Central African Republic-- after papal visit

November 11, 2015

The UN plans to step up peacekeeping efforts in the troubled Central African Republic. But the additional UN troops will not arrive until after a visit by Pope Francis later this month.

Escalating violence in the Central African Republic has jeopardized plans for the papal visit. The Pope is due in Bangui, the nation’s capital, on November 29, as part of a three-nation trip to Africa. Vatican officials have said that there are no plans to alter that schedule because of the country’s political instability.

An international peacekeeping force drove rebels out of Bangui in January 2014, and there are now more than 11,000 UN troops in the Central African Republic. But with fighting continuing across much of the country, more UN forces may soon be added.
