Vatican's UN delegate repeats commitment to international status for Jerusalem

The Vatican’s representative at UN headquarters in New York has reaffirmed the commitment of the Holy See to “a comprehensive, just and lasting solution to the question of the City of Jerusalem, which should, inter alia, ensure the freedom of religion and of conscience of its inhabitants, as well as the free and unhindered access to the Holy Places by the faithful of all religions and nationalities.”

In a November 11 address to a session on Palestinian refugees, Archbishop Bernardito Auza reminded UN officials that Christians—including Palestinian Christians-- are being driven out of their homes in the Middle East. He remarked that some Palestinian Christians, having found refuge in Syria, are now being displaced yet again.

Archbishop Auza praised the government of Lebanon and Jordan for their willingness to host Palestinian refugees. He observed, however, that both nations—particularly Lebanon—are now experiencing their own political difficulties, while facing new waves of refugees.
