Venezuelan bishops call for international election observers

November 11, 2015

The bishops of Venezuela have called for international observers to help ensure fair parliamentary elections on December 6.

President Nicolás Maduro’s United Socialist Party of Venezuela currently holds 99 out of 167 seats, and the government’s refusal to allow observers has gained international criticism.

In their November 10 statement, the bishops reminded the faithful of their “serious responsibility” to take part in the election and called for “the liberty to choose without coercion or restrictions.” They also declared November 29 a day of prayer and expressed their support for local Catholic initiatives that promote a “democratic, transparent, and peaceful election.”
