Effective disciples must share people's joys and sorrows, Pope says in homily during outdoor Mass in Florence

November 10, 2015

The Christian faithful “must never fall into the temptation of adopting an aloof attitude,” Pope Francis said in his homily as he celebrated Mass in Florence on Tuesday afternoon, November 10.

Addressing the congregation at an outdoor Mass, in the Stadio Artemio Franchi, the Pope said that a Christian who isolates himself from the public “begins to judge people according to his own thoughts and convictions.” In that way he loses the ability to communicate effectively, which requires “a healthy contact with reality and with people’s lives, with their joys and sorrows.”

To share the Gospel, the Pope continued, entails a willingness “to go against the tide” and to “overcome the prevailing opinion.”
