Vatican replaces board of hospital foundation following charges of improper spending

November 04, 2015

The Vatican has appointed a new executive board for a foundation associated with the Bambino Gesu hospital, in the wake of questions about the foundation’s spending.

Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s Secretary of State, named a new slate of board members in a bid to launch the foundation on a “completely new” basis, in order to “guarantee transparency, solidarity, and innovation,” the foundation’s president, Mariella Enoc, announced on November 4.

The new board was appointed after reports emerged that the foundation had paid for expensive renovations on the Vatican apartment of Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the former Secretary of State.

The Bambino Gesu pediatric hospital was established in 1869 and donated to the Holy See in 1924. Last year the Vatican announced plans to review the management of the hospital, which has been plagued by reports of inefficient management.
