Medieval doors, mosaics restored at Church of the Nativity

November 04, 2015

The 13th-century wooden doors that separate the narthex from the nave at the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem have undergone restoration, as have 12th-century mosaics of angels in the nave.

“Over the centuries, many tesserae of the angel mosaics were lost,” according to the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem. “Therefore, restorers are filling in these lost parts with a layer that they engrave to give onlookers an idea of how they appeared before.”
