Human-rights abuses likely to continue under new Chinese population policy, expert says

Steven Mosher of the Population Research Institute, who helped to expose the brutality of China's "one-child" population policy, predicts that human-rights abuses will continue even as the Beijing regime allows for larger families.

Although the Chinese government has eased its restrictions on childbirth, Mosher notes, the policy change is "not because senior Party officials have suddenly developed a conscience." The main impetus for change, Mosher says, is the realization by Communist leaders that the country's labor force is shrinking, while the number of people approaching old age is soaring. 

To cope with that demographic decline, Mosher says, the Beijing government will move quickly from allowing couples to have a 2nd child to requiring larger families. He argues: "A government bent on controlling the fertility of its people will do whatever is necessary to produce the number of children it thinks necessary."

Mosher estimates that the one-child policy, adopted in 1979, led to 336 million abortions.
