Special jubilee indulgence for Legionaries of Christ, Regnum Christi

October 30, 2015

Pope Francis has granted a special plenary indulgence to members of the Legionaries of Christ and Regnum Christi during their 75th jubilee year.

Members may gain a plenary indulgence, if, in addition to fulfilling the usual conditions, they renew their vows of promises, engage in the spiritual or corporal works of mercy, take part in missions, or teach or learn Christian doctrine.

The Pope’s decision was the occasion of tendentious headlines, such as The Guardian's “Legion of Christ: Pope Francis offers to forgive paedophile scandal order.”

I have met an excellent former legionaire priest, indeed he seemed as one of the best men of all I ever knew. I know that an indulgence is supposed to be a good thing but it also seems like and indictment of many who had no part in Maciel's misdeeds.
