Cardinal Parolin reflects on peace, human rights

October 29, 2015

At a conference commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council’s Declaration on the Relation of the Church to Non-Christian Religions, Cardinal Pietro Parolin emphasized the role played by education in promoting peace.

Comparing peace to an ocean horizon that is visible but distant, the Vatican’s Secretary of State discussed shalom in the Old Testament and said that “in the New Testament, peace is the person of Jesus Christ.”

He then reviewed the teaching of St. John XXIII’s encyclical on peace, recalling its statements on human rights and the natural moral law, before speaking about papal peace initiatives of the past five decades and calling on leaders of other religions to foster a “humanistic education that respects the fundamental freedoms of the person.”
