Chilean activist was not blocked from papal sex-abuse panel, another panel member says

October 16, 2015

Marie Collins, a member of the papal commission on sexual abuse, has said that she is satisfied that another potential member was not kept off the panel because of complaints by Chilean prelates.

Email messages that leaked to the public last week showed that Cardinals Ricard Ezzati Andrello and Francisco Javier Errazuriz sought to prevent the appointment of Juan Carlos Cruz to the papal commission. Cruz had accused Cardinal Errazuriz of covering up evidence of abuse by one notorious priest.

Collins—who had said that she was “disgusted” by the attitudes of the two Chilean cardinals—told the Irish Times that she had investigated and determined to her satisfaction that although Cruz ultimately was not appointed to the papal commission, he “definitely was not blocked” because of the cardinals’ objections.
