African cardinal: Synod’s perspective is ‘essentially Western’

October 15, 2015

In a brief interview with a journalist from a French Christian radio network, Cardinal Philippe Ouédraogo of Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, said that the Synod of Bishops’ perspective is “essentially Western.”

Stating that persons from the West drafted the synod’s working document, the cardinal, who is a synod father, expressed regret that the focus was on European topics such as Communion for those who have remarried outside the Church, while “we”-- likely a reference to Africans-- are at the heart of Catholicity.”
