English archbishop sees chance for allowing Anglicans to receive the Eucharist

October 13, 2015

An English archbishop has suggested that the ban on intercommunion between Catholics and Anglicans might be “reconsidered” in light of ecumenical advances.

Archbishop Bernard Longley of Birmingham—the co-chairman of the Anglican-Roman Catholic International Commission (ARCIC)—told the Church of Ireland Gazette that a 1993 Vatican document allows for intercommunion under certain unusual circumstances. When asked whether those conditions could be expanded to allow broader access to Communion by Anglicans, he replied:

My personal view is, you are right to draw attention to the changes which we have already seen on the basis of a deeper theological understanding of one another’s churches.

The Archbishop cannot be serious. Anglicans are not growing in a deeper theological understanding of the Church. They now ordain women bishops and recognize same-sex unions.
