California diocese transfers property to parishes; critics see a defense against lawsuits

October 09, 2015

The Diocese of Orange, California, has transferred property valued at roughly $100 million to parishes, prompting complaints that the legal moves are intended as protection against lawsuits.

A spokesman for the Orange diocese said that the property transfers were carried out to make the “civil structure more congruent with the established canonical status of our parishes.” However, the transfer of diocesan property to parishes could limit the resources available to plaintiffs who seek to hold the diocese responsible for sexual abuse.

Notice the Bishop's name does not appear in the article. Hummn... Someone ought to remind him that it is a sin to tell a lie! Of course he is protecting assets! Why not just admit it?! This is the kind of "clever" move that turns people away from the Church. Great CEO move. Poor move for a religious leader.
