Vatican envoy relays Pope's message on development, ecology to UN

In an October 8 address to the UN General Assembly, the Vatican’s representative quoted Pope Francis in saying that development policies should allow people “to be dignified agents of their own destiny.”

Archbishop Bernadito Auza, the permanent observer for the Holy See at UN headquarters in New York, summarized the message of Pope Francis in Laudato Si' regarding the connections between development, environmental protection, and the limits of the profit motive:

The inherent link between sustainable development and care for our common home  challenges those models of development that, while inarguably generating wealth and economic progress, also cause greater socio-economic inequalities and the destruction of our environment.
