Synod fathers elect officials of discussion groups

October 07, 2015

Prelates taking part in the Synod of Bishops in Rome have elected officials of each of the 13 discussion groups, or circuli minores.

The moderators of each group will guide the discussion, while the relators will draft weekly reports on the discussion that takes place within the group. These reports will be made public.

At this year’s synod, three groups will conduct their discussions in French, four in English, three in Italian, two in Spanish, and one in German.

Three of the moderators—Cardinal Robert Sarah, Cardinal Francisco Robles Ortega, and Cardinal Christoph Schönborn—also served as moderators of the discussion groups at last year’s synod. The four English-language group moderators are Cardinal George Pell, Archbishop Eamon Martin, Cardinal Vincent Nichols, and Cardinal Thomas Collins.

Two American prelates—Archbishop Joseph Kurtz and Archbishop Charles Chaput—were elected as relators.
