The hungry are persons, not statistics, Pope tells food-distribution charity

October 05, 2015

Pope Francis received members of the Fondazione Banco Alimentare in audience on October 3 and said that those who suffer from hunger are persons, not numbers.

The organization, founded 25 years ago, distributes surplus food to the hungry.

“Hunger has assumed dimensions of a true ‘scandal’ which threatens the life and dignity of many people” in a world “rich in food resources, thanks to enormous technological advances,” the Pope said on October 3 in the Paul VI Audience Hall.

Even if “we cannot do a miracle as did Jesus,” he said, referring to the multiplication of the loaves and fishes, “we can educate ourselves in humanity to recognize the humanity present in every person in need … Remember to look them in the eye, shake their hand, recognize in them the flesh of Christ, and help them to regain their dignity.”
