Convent attacked in Myanmar; priest, nuns leave village

October 01, 2015

The body of a four-year-old girl was found on the grounds of a convent in Nyaungwon, Myanmar—prompting angry villagers to attack the convent and destroy religious statues, according to a UCA News report.

A 14-year-old orphan housed by the nuns is suspected in the murder. Police escorted Father Benjamin Htwe Naing and three nuns out of the village.

“The situation is calm now as religious leaders and local authorities are trying to solve it peacefully,” said Bishop Alexander Pyone Cho of Pyay.

The Southeast Asian nation of 51.5 million is officially Buddhist. 4% of residents are Muslim, 3% are Protestant, and 1% are Catholic.
