Report: leading Ghana prelate strongly criticizes homosexual relations

September 30, 2015

The president of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference commented on homosexuality in a recent interview with a radio station based in Accra, the nation’s capital.

“The Bible tells us completely in the book of Romans chapter 1 from verse 6 downwards that those who practice and those who endorse same-sex marriage politically, religiously, or whatever are all guilty before God,” Bishop Joseph Osei-Bonsu of Konongo-Mampong was quoted as saying.

“Homosexuals, lesbians, liars, and sex abusers are not going to go to heaven, and the Bible categorically says that,” he reportedly added. “It is no man saying that, or no bishop saying they will not go to heaven: it is the Bible that says that, so they will not go to heaven.”

Ghana, a West African nation of 27 million, is 58% Protestant, 13% Catholic, and 18% Muslim, with 5% of the population retaining indigenous beliefs.

We pray that the hearts of all will be open to the Word of God, to repentance and pardon and a life in the Spirit. The Bible is filled with characters who reneged against God but somehow were given the opportunity to repent. St Paul is a NT example of someone 'who was born when nobody expected it'. His repentance, renewal and the exemplary words of his Epistles have been an encouragement, reassurance and a guide for those who respond to God's merciful Love.

Accra was the location of the meeting of 50 African bishops (5 of them cardinals) in June 2015 "to protect the sacredness of marriage which is now being attacked by all sorts of ideologies that intend to destroy the family in Africa" (Cdl. Robert Sarah). Ten essays by participants have been published in English by Ignatius Press as: "Christ's New Homeland--Africa: Contribution to the Synod on the Family by African Pastors".
