Catholic schools re-open in Israel after government eases budget cuts

September 28, 2015

Israel’s education ministry has rolled back severe cuts in funding for Catholic schools, ending a stalemate that had prompted Church officials to shut down schools in protest.

The agreement, struck on September 26, led to an immediate release of government funding for the Catholic schools, which in turn immediately opened their doors. Bishop Giacinto Boulos Marcuzzo, the vicar for Jerusalem, told the AsiaNews service that 15 school days were lost during the strike, but “we have plenty of time to catch up.”
