Europe's duty to accept refugees, archbishop argues

September 24, 2015

“It is our duty as Christians to welcome the refugees,” said Archbishop Jean-Claude Hollerich of Luxembourg, in his homily at a September 23 “Mass for Europe.”

Archbishop Hollerich—whose country is now holding the rotating presidency of the European Union—was homilist for the Mass, organized by the Commission of Bishops' Conferences of the European Community (COMECE). The annual Mass is scheduled as the political institutions of the European community begin their autumn sessions.

Archbishop Hollerich acknowledged the “inculturation and coexistence problems” caused by the influx of refugees. But he insisted that “the problems and complexity of situations must not lead to the disappearance of Europe’s soul.”
