Mecca disaster: over 700 killed in stampede

September 24, 2015

Several hundred people were killed when Muslim pilgrims stampeded at Mecca on September 24.

At least 700 people died, and an equal number were injured, when two groups collided during the height of the annual pilgrimage to Islam's holiest shrine. A spokesman for the Saudi Arabian government said that the casualties were caused by the failure of pilgrims to follow instructions.

The deaths marked the most serious at Mecca since 1990, when over 1500 people died in a similar stampede.
