Senate vote expected on legislation barring most late-term abortions

The US Senate is expected to vote on September 22 on legislation that would protect most unborn children from late-term abortion.
The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, which is supported by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, passed the House of Representatives in a 242-184 vote in May. It faces an uphill fight in the Senate and the prospect of a presidential veto.
Citing the “substantial medical evidence that an unborn child is capable of experiencing pain at least by 20 weeks after fertilization, this measure asserts a compelling governmental interest in protecting unborn children from this stage,” stated the National Committee for a Human Life Amendment, which works closely with the bishops’ conference. “With limited exceptions, H.R. 36 makes it unlawful to perform or attempt to perform an abortion if the probable post-fertilization age of the unborn child is 20 weeks or greater.”
