Bishop: economic interests foster Syrian conflict

September 17, 2015

The Chaldean Catholic bishop of Aleppo, Syria’s largest city, said that “economic interests at the regional and international level”-- interests manifest in the arms trade-- are fostering the civil war there.

“At an international level, [there is] a determination to continue the war, to destroy, to divide, until everything has been leveled to the ground, like they did in Iraq, like they did in Libya, like they are doing in Yemen,” said Bishop Antoine Audo.

In Aleppo, there is “danger everywhere, not only for Christians but for everybody,” he told the Catholic News Agency.

“It’s a very hard situation of danger and poverty,” he added. “When I walk out onto the street I see an aggressive poverty. Misery.”
