Philippine prelate warns: approve autonomous region or risk Islamist extremism
September 09, 2015
A Philippine archbishop has called upon the nation’s lawmakers to approve legislation that would create an autonomous region for the Muslim Moro people.
Failure to do so “will favor the growth of extremism, fundamentalism, terrorism,” warned Archbishop Antonio Ledesma of Cagayan de Oro, according to a UCA News report.
From 1978 until a 2014 peace agreement that included a proposal for an autonomous region, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front used violence in its quest for greater autonomy.
