‘Protect church-state separation’ during papal visit, group urges

September 03, 2015

Americans United for Separation of Church and State has warned officials in Washington, New York, and Philadelphia to “respect separation of church and state” during the upcoming papal visit.

“Government officials must be very careful not to spend taxpayer dollars for any of the Pope’s religious activities while he is in the United States,” the group stated. “Government bodies must not provide any aid to a Pope’s religious activities that goes beyond the provision of services — such as police, safety, and security — that are regularly given for comparable public events of a similar size.”

I am unable to find "separation of church and state" anywhere in the U.S. Constitution, so I don't know what this group is talking about. I do know that the U.S. regularly spends government funds to welcome the heads of government from other countries, and I expect they will do so for the head of Vatican City, the smallest country in the world.

Do you suppose they've issued this same warning every time the pope visits?

This Catholic taxpayer has no objections to spending his tax dollars on the Pope's religious activities.
