English cardinal urges faithful to oppose bill allowing assisted suicide

September 02, 2015

England’s leading Catholic prelate has urged Catholics to contact their representatives in Parliament, as a vote approaches on a bill that would allow physician-assisted suicide.

'The intrinsic value of each human life will be gravely undermined if this or any bill to legalize assisted suicide were to become law,” said Cardinal Vincent Nichols of Westminster.

The cardinal said that the legislation is based on the premise that “some lives are worth less than others.” He also observed that the involvement of doctors in ending human lives would violate “the ‘do no harm’ principle that underpins all medical practice.”

If legalized suicide is allowed, the cardinal continued, “it will be impossible to ensure that people’s decisions will not be influenced by many kinds of pressure or coercion.”

For Cardinal Nichols, the morality of the gay agenda seems to be fine, but the morality of assisted suicide is not. If even cardinals pick and choose the Church teachings they want to follow, is it really so surprising that ordinary lay Catholics so the same thing. And what kind of a Church will this lead to? Will it lead to any Church at all?
