Indonesia’s bishops decry corruption

In a statement published on the 70th anniversary of the nation’s independence, Indonesia’s bishops lamented corruption.

“Democracy is lacking and impartiality is little practiced, in the domain of the politics of Parliament and among government officials,” they stated, according to a report from AsiaNews. “Many laws and regulations are poorly prepared and approved only to achieve personal goals in the medium term and common interests between factions.”

The nation of 255.5 million ranks fourth among the world’s nations in population and has more Muslims than any other nation. It is It is 87% Muslim, 7% Protestant, 3% Catholic, and 2% Hindu.
