The poor are ‘victims of climate change,’ says Myanmar’s cardinal

August 19, 2015

Preaching at a Mass that preceded a climate-change seminar sponsored by the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences, Cardinal Charles Maung Bo of Yangon called for action to counter climate change.

“Evil is marching with glee, destroying human families, destroying God’s gift of nature,” he preached.

“Our poor did not even know the words global warming, but they have been the victims of climate change for the last 10 years,” he continued, citing destructive storms such as Cyclone Nargis, which killed 138,000 people in four nations.

“We have lost so much flora and fauna in the last 50 years,” he added. “Forests and rivers are being destroyed. The Mekong River, the Irrawaddy River and so many rivers in East Asia are dangerously exploited. What were sporadic attacks on our ecosystem has now turned into a chronic illness for our planet.”
